A Pre-Employment and Work Maturity Center, TeenWorks opens the doors to Summer employment opportunities creating the positive atmosphere for all Hmong youth in Minneapolis to participate in (or observe the experiences through discussion) of the youth in the program. School year textbook lessons are tested in real life. Community needs are observed and met by the youth as they take their first employment. In some cases the service will be to repair houses for senior citizens, in others it may be to sample a job and decide technical school or college is the route to follow, rather than the dead-end of “temp jobs” and low-wage assembly positions. We emphasize youth exposure to various disciplines including: agriculture, art, automotive, entrepreneurial, health, language arts, learning styles and strategies, math, science, technology, woodworking, and work skills, to open their eyes to the diverse educational opportunities as well as to build a foundation for community involvement. Program Elements:
• SCANS Skills inventory Educational Development
• Intern Placement and Training Activities
• Job Application and Interviewing Process
• Demonstrating Proper Work Attitudes and Behaviors
• Employer placement and support for first employment
• Demonstrating Effective Interpersonal Skill
• Integration with Society of Manufacturing Engineers STEP UP Program for our young Hmong women in what for them are the non-traditional fields of science and technology
